Garbage patches are areas of increased concentration of marine debris such as plastics that are formed by gyres.

Gyre

A large circular current formed by wind patterns and forces from Earth’s rotation. Because of the circular motion, it pulls floating patches to the gyre and trashes are trapped in the gyres.

Trashes in the ocean mostly come from the land, sewer systems, and rivers to the sea. Other factors include directly throwing trash in the ocean, ships hauling cargo, oil rigs and ocean sources.

There are lots of trashes in the ocean and buoyant trash flows consistently whereas others sink by the effects of sun, waves and other factors.
